A Simple DIY Hornet Trap That Helps Keep Them Away from Your Outdoor Space
Seeing hornets buzzing around your outdoor table, fruit bowl, or drinks can quickly make spending time outside feel uncomfortable. While a homemade trap can help reduce the number of hornets searching for food, it needs to be assembled and placed correctly. Otherwise, you could end up attracting them exactly where you relax.
What You’ll Need
To make this simple trap, gather the following:
- One 1.5-liter plastic bottle
- 200 ml of light beer
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of vinegar
- Strong tape
- A piece of string
How to Make the Trap
Cut the top section of the plastic bottle about 10 cm (4 inches) below the cap.
Turn the top upside down and place it inside the bottom half to create a funnel. Secure the two pieces together with strong tape.
Make two small holes near the top edge of the bottle and thread a piece of string through them so the trap can be hung safely.
Prepare the Bait
Pour the following ingredients into the bottom of the bottle:
- 200 ml of light beer
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of vinegar
The sweet scent attracts hornets looking for food, while the vinegar helps make the bait less appealing to many bees.
Where to Hang the Trap
Proper placement is just as important as the bait itself.
Hang the trap about 1.5 meters (5 feet) above the ground in a shaded area.
Keep it at least 10 meters (33 feet) away from:
- doors;
- windows;
- outdoor dining tables;
- children’s play areas;
- pet food and water bowls.
Never place the trap near a hornet nest, and avoid approaching any nest to inspect it.
Maintenance
Replace the bait every 5 to 7 days to keep it effective.
Wear gloves when handling the trap and try to do the maintenance during the cooler parts of the day, when hornets are generally less active.
Before disposing of the bottle, seal it securely and wash your hands thoroughly afterward.
